East Street Market
Heart of Our Community
Welcome to East Street Market: Your Vibrant Community Hub!
We have a vision for East Street Market that goes beyond being just a marketplace.
We want it to be a thriving community hub, a place where people from different backgrounds can come together, connect, and share their stories. Our goal is to transform the market into a welcoming space where locals and visitors alike can meet, sit, talk, and enjoy delicious food.
To achieve this, we have specific deliverables in mind. First and foremost, we recognise the need for improved facilities, infrastructure, and the overall environment of the market. We aim to implement centralised storage facilities, ensuring that the market operates efficiently.
Additionally, we will prioritise continuous and improved waste management, creating a cleaner and more sustainable space for everyone.

Statement on the November attacks
in East Street Market
Everyone at East Street Market is shocked and devastated at this senseless attack on members of our community. We are grateful for the quick thinking of the market traders in containing the situation and to the emergency services for attending so quickly. Our hearts are broken for the family and friends of those affected and we are offering every assistance we can.
During this difficult time, East Street Community remains steadfast in our commitment to our community, offering practical and emotional support to the traders and shop owners.
Remembering Tina Daley
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Clementina "Tina" Daley, the cherished Chair of the East Street Market Traders Association. Tina left us on the 2nd of February 2024, but her remarkable spirit will forever resonate within our community.
Born in Sagamu, Nigeria, on June 21, 1958, Tina was a true South Londoner, dedicating over 40 years of her life to the East Street Market. Starting her journey as a legal secretary, Tina’s hard work and charisma led her to become the Chair of the Traders Association, a position she held with honour until her last days.
Known for her infectious smile and compassionate nature, Tina was a beacon of kindness and generosity. Her legacy of love and resilience continues to inspire us all. Tina, you are deeply missed, but your spirit lives on in every corner of East Street Market.
Rest in peace, dear Tina. Your legacy is eternal.

Food Unites Us All
One of the key elements of our vision is to increase and expand the range of hot food stalls available. Imagine walking through the market, tantalised by the aromas of diverse cuisines. We plan to host special events, cooking demonstrations, and seasonal food celebrations. For example, in June, we'll hold a strawberry festival, featuring plump and juicy strawberries from nearby Kent. We also want to celebrate the rich diversity of our local communities by highlighting both UK-grown foods and imported ingredients such as yams, mooli, and callaloo, which hold great significance in our diets and cultures.
Steps Towards Change
What We Believe In
Celebrating Together
At East Street Market, we believe in celebrating together. That's why we envision hosting special events and themed days for Christmas, Easter, Eid, and Diwali. These celebrations will bring our community closer and foster a sense of unity and inclusivity.
In today's digital age, connectivity is crucial. That's why we plan to install market-wide WiFi coverage. This will benefit both traders and visitors, allowing seamless transactions and enhancing the overall market experience. Furthermore, it will enable us to gather valuable data on usage patterns, enabling us to make continuous improvements.
To enhance accessibility and create a pedestrian-friendly space, we advocate for a permanent road closure and clear signposting. This will not only provide a unified appearance for stall fronts and awnings but also address the parking needs of shoppers. We propose offering a one-hour free parking option for shoppers who spend a nominal agreed amount. Additionally, we will allocate more local disabled bays to ensure inclusivity.
Connectivity Is Crucial
Key Elements
Effective Marketing
To increase market use and footfall, we understand the importance of effective marketing and communication. We will invest in expanded publicity, PR, and communication efforts, utilising social media and printed news to create an authentic identity and a powerful brand for East Street. By recognising our past, and involving and supporting present traders and businesses, we will build an alluring destination for the future. Our work is never done, and we can use all the help we can get. One of the ways you can take part is by Volunteering. Spread the word about all that East Street Community is doing, and help us gain the support we need.
Partnership And Up-skill Local Stakeholders
The Market Charter
To ensure a smooth and harmonious operation, we propose creating a market charter in collaboration with key stakeholders. This charter will establish clear expectations and promote collective and individual responsibility. Regular meetings will be held to foster open discussions and address any issues proactively, mitigating risks before they emerge.
Market traders and the local community will take the lead in shaping the future of East Street Market. We will work together to develop a mission and vision statement, recording our shared values and outlining how we will care for, nurture, and grow our market as a vibrant community space.
In the spirit of partnership, we aim to up-skill local stakeholders, equipping them with the necessary business support to thrive. By fostering a network of mutual assistance, we can empower each other and strengthen our local economy.
Finally, we want to make it effortless for new stall holders to join East Street Market, promoting a diverse range of traders and products. To ensure a balanced offering, a panel will be established to determine which new stalls will complement the existing ones, creating a vibrant marketplace where variety meets cohesion.
Join us on this exciting journey of transformation and community-building at East Street Market.
